How to Protect Plants from the Rain

Plants get too wet as a result of heavy rainfall and standing water. Seeds are washed away, seedlings are damaged, plants are chilled, and the soil is compacted when there is too much rain.

Take advantage of tree cover: Plants emerging under the canopies of large trees are protected from the rain. On the other hand, crop roots can compete for nutrients and water, making it difficult to grow smaller plants at the tree's base.

Use building overhangs to create a rain shadow: Overhangs keep plants dry by preventing rain from hitting the fields. Rain safety can be provided by hand-built supports covered in heavy plastic or glass panes while still allowing enough light.

Set up portable buffers for rain, wind, and cold: Cloches, upside-down plastic milk jugs, jars, and pots over seedlings are examples. Tomato cages made of plastic or burlap may also be used to protect transplants.
